Son travail prend sa source à l’exact point d’intersection entre son vécu personnel et la réalité sociale et culturelle qui l’entoure. Elle détourne ainsi avec ironie et humour les interrogations politiques qu’elle rencontre dans son quotidien. Récoltant images et objets trouvés aux hasards de sa route, Fatma Ciftci construit une lecture très personnelle de l’imagerie sociale qui articule mémoire et présent. Dans une optique de jeu de matière constamment renouvelé, elle utilise des supports et des techniques extrêmement diversifiés comme la photographie, la vidéo, la performance ou le dessin.

My works generally take their sources from the points in which my own experience intersects with the social and cultural facts. Political and traditional issues, which I face in everyday life turn into ironical and humorous statements in my art by reconstructions of found images and objects. However, my interest is not to make a political statement but to make a personal reading of the social imagery. These images appear in my works unconsciously, regardless of their contexts while trying to create playful games for myself. Therefore, the outcome of the pieces and situations I create become playful and naïve.
I introduce different materials into my works randomly in a new game each time. I use various media like photography, video, performance, animation, and drawings with an amateur approach. The traditional materials, such as henna, cross-stitch and knitting have been taught to me by my family while I was growing up. Thus, the use of hand-craft has been embedded to my personality starting from my childhood. I can say that my playful art making its bases on these childhood experiences.
While playing my games I try to combine my memories from past with the everyday life I live in by small touches on found images and objects. These playful combinations make vague statements on social and cultural differences or situations through carefully crafted, handmade or digitally montaged works which sometimes have dark undertones.

Dans le cadre d'ITINÉRAIRES : BOSPHORE -TURQUIE, au Centre d’art contemporain Georges Pompidou, Fatma Ciftci présente ONCE UPON A TIME IN ISTANBUL, une vidéo composée d’extraits d’un film 16mm trouvé, portant sur la vie à Istanbul et filmé par un amateur dans
les années 70, et doublé d’extraits de dialogues romantiques issus de mélodrames populaires de la même période, qui contrastent les moments quotidiens de la vie avec les grandes émotions du cinéma.

Once Upon a Time in Istanbul (2009), is a video project that starts with a found 16 mm film. This video is completed with old Turkish movies dialogs alongside that 16 mm film, which is formed with the images from the people in Istanbul, 1970s and their social life in that period. An interesting game between these sequences, which is framed casual life in Istanbul in 1970s in a witty way within an amateur view, and some cliché lyrics from old movies mark some differences and paradox.
